The Minister for Health of the Republic of Ghana, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appointed Ellis Owusu-Dabo as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
The appointment, which takes effect from 1 March 2026, is for a four-year term.
Professor Owusu-Dabo’s appointment recognises his distinguished career in public health research, academic leadership, and his longstanding contributions to advancing medical research and training in Ghana and beyond. His extensive experience is expected to strengthen the strategic direction of KCCR as the Centre continues to play a pivotal role in tropical medicine research and global health innovation.
As Chairman of the Advisory Board, Professor Owusu-Dabo will provide strategic leadership and advisory support to the Centre in fulfilling its mandate of promoting cutting-edge research, innovation, and capacity building in tropical medicine and related health sciences.
The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in infectious diseases research, public health interventions, and scientific training. The Centre has made significant contributions to addressing tropical diseases affecting Ghana, Africa, and the global community.
Professor Owusu-Dabo is a Ghanaian medical doctor, epidemiologist, and Professor of Global Health at KNUST. He previously served as Pro Vice-Chancellor at KNUST from 2020 to 2024 and has also held key leadership roles, including Dean of the School of Public Health and the first Scientific Director of KCCR.
He holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from the University of Nottingham and has extensive experience in infectious disease research, global health, and health systems strengthening. Widely recognised for his research contributions, he has authored hundreds of scientific publications and maintains numerous international research collaborations.
Professor Owusu-Dabo is regarded as one of Ghana’s leading public health scholars and has played a significant role in strengthening biomedical research and training across Africa.
